Hunters in Okon, Ohafia, Abia State, have killed a massive buffalo (Atú).
I didn’t even know buffalo still existed in Eastern Nigeria. Looking at the size of this one, it makes you wonder how many are still left in the region.
The video shows members of the community celebrating as they bring the animal home. You can understand the excitement — meat, tradition, and the pride of a successful hunt. But at the same time, it’s hard not to feel a little sad. Once these animals disappear from our forests, they may be gone forever.
Poverty, traditional hunting practices, and inadequate wildlife protection could be contributing to the decline of wildlife in the region.
What do you think? Should there be stronger efforts to protect the wild animals still left in the East, or is this simply part of the natural order of things?
