₦1.12bn SUVs:inside APC’s Lavish Campaign Spending As Nigerians Grapple Hardship

"Seven 2026 SUVs Worth ₦1.12bn: Inside APC’s Lavish Campaign Spending As Nigerians Grapple With Hardship."

As President Bola Tinubu’s administration prepares for the 2027 general elections, a familiar question about political priorities has resurfaced following the distribution of brand-new 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs to selected youth leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party’s National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, announced the presentation in a statement via X, expressing gratitude to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for her continued support for the party’s youth

structure.

“Today, I presented a brand new 2026 Prado to my committed selected youth leaders to aid their election mobilisation activities,” Israel wrote. He added that the party’s supremacy would be demonstrated through its actions during the election period, declaring that the APC would deliver “polling unit by polling unit”.

Behind The Glamour

The announcement may appear to be a straightforward account of a political party equipping its operatives for an election campaign. But in a country where young people are contending with high living costs, limited economic opportunities and the difficulties of establishing independent livelihoods, the distribution raises broader questions about political priorities, youth empowerment and the meaning of the government’s promise of renewed hope.

How much are the vehicles worth? Who financed their acquisition? What tangible benefits will the exercise deliver to young Nigerians outside the party’s political structure? And should a party seeking another mandate be judged only by its capacity to mobilise voters or also by how effectively its policies improve their lives?

These questions deserve attention as the 2027 election approaches.

LEADERSHIP reports that the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is a premium sport utility vehicle designed for both urban driving and demanding terrain. Its features include a powerful turbocharged engine, a spacious cabin, advanced driving assistance systems and off-road technologies. But these capabilities come at a considerable cost.

According to the Nigerian website of Toyota’s authorised distributor, CFAO Mobility, the 2.4-litre turbo-petrol Adventure version of the Land Cruiser Prado is listed at ₦160 million. In comparison, the Premium version is listed at ₦190 million. Prices may vary depending on the model and specifications.

Using the listed Adventure price as a benchmark, seven vehicles would cost approximately ₦1.12 billion. If all seven were Premium versions at the listed price, the total would rise to ₦1.33 billion.

The actual cost of the vehicles presented by Israel has not been independently established, and the available information does not identify their exact specifications. The figures are therefore estimates based on advertised Nigerian prices, not a verified invoice for the vehicles. Nevertheless, the estimates indicate the financial scale of the presentation.

Using the Central Bank of Nigeria’s reported foreign exchange rate of approximately ₦1,329.51 to the dollar on September 25, 2026, the ₦160 million Adventure price translates to about $120,345 per vehicle. Seven would amount to approximately $842,415.

At the Premium price of ₦190 million, each vehicle would be worth about $142,910, bringing the total to approximately $1 million. These dollar equivalents are calculated from Nigerian retail prices. They are not US-market sticker prices, nor do they establish the amount actually paid by whoever provided the vehicles.

The distinction matters. The available announcement does not establish whether the vehicles were purchased by the APC, donated by a private individual, financed by the First Lady or acquired through another arrangement. What is clear is that the presentation was explicitly linked to election mobilisation.

That makes the intended use of the vehicles, the source of their funding and the results expected from the investment legitimate questions for the party’s leadership.

What Could ₦1.12bn Do For Young Nigerians?

The debate is not necessarily about whether political parties should provide their officials with vehicles. Campaign organisations require transport to coordinate meetings, reach communities and organise activities across geographical areas.

The question is whether a mobilisation investment of this scale is accompanied by a similarly ambitious commitment to addressing the economic difficulties confronting young Nigerians.

At the estimated cost of ₦1.12 billion, the seven vehicles represent a substantial amount of money that could also support other interventions, depending on their design and implementation.

For instance, the sum could provide 11,200 grants of ₦100,000 each to young people seeking to establish small businesses. It could also finance 1,120 grants of ₦1 million each for beneficiaries with more capital-intensive business proposals.

Alternatively, at the national minimum wage benchmark of ₦70,000 per month, ₦1.12 billion is equivalent to 16,000 monthly wage payments.

These are illustrative comparisons, not claims that the money could automatically create 11,200 sustainable businesses or guarantee long-term employment for 16,000 people. Effective enterprise support would require training, monitoring, access to markets and other measures to ensure that beneficiaries can sustain their businesses. Still, the comparisons help put the scale of the vehicle presentation into perspective.

For a young Nigerian graduate struggling to secure a job, a young entrepreneur unable to obtain affordable credit or a skilled worker attempting to build a business from limited savings, the question is straightforward: what comparable opportunities are being created for them?

The seven vehicles may improve the mobility of their recipients. Still, they do not, by themselves, create jobs, provide vocational training or make business financing more accessible to young people outside the party’s political structure.

The responsibility for providing those opportunities rests on a wider set of institutions, including government agencies, financial institutions and private-sector employers.

Yet the APC is not an ordinary political organisation. It is the governing party, and its youth leadership is closely associated with the political project of President Tinubu’s administration.

Consequently, the party’s approach to youth mobilisation inevitably invites scrutiny of how its political priorities relate to the economic realities facing the population it seeks to represent.

Speaking, an ADC chieftain, Samuel Ede, said:

“At a time when millions of Nigerians are battling hunger, unemployment and rising living costs, the APC is preparing for 2027 with seven luxury SUVs worth an estimated ₦1.12 billion. This raises serious questions about the party’s priorities. Nigerian youths need jobs, opportunities and economic relief, not just political mobilisation ahead of elections.”

Reacting as well, Sunday Tukur, a political analyst, said:

“The question Nigerians should be asking is what seven Prados worth an estimated ₦1.12 billion will achieve beyond electoral mobilisation. That amount could support meaningful youth empowerment initiatives if properly invested. Political parties have a right to organise for elections, but the contrast between luxury campaign spending and the economic hardship facing ordinary Nigerians deserves serious scrutiny.”

Hardship: Nigerians Speak

A Reuters report published in August 2026 highlighted the continuing cost-of-living difficulties facing Nigerians despite signs of improving investor confidence.

The report cited World Bank estimates indicating that more than half of Nigerians lived in poverty in 2025, compared with about 42 per cent in 2022.

Reacting to this development, Nigerians on X expressed their thoughts on the APC’s decision.

Kayode Ogundamisi said:

“For context, @dayoisrael is the youth leader of Nigeria’s ruling APC, the same party whose president, Tinubu, is asking Nigerians to endure more suffering.

When a party’s youth leader can donate multiple Prados to party loyalists, you begin to understand why more Nigerians are turning against Tinubu and the APC.

If it’s not the First Lady dipping into what is possibly Nigeria’s commonwealth to distribute billions in gifts, it’s the President’s son flaunting billions. Now, the party’s youth leader is joining the spectacle, practically telling ordinary Nigerians to eff off! While Nigerians struggle to survive, the ruling elite compete to flaunt the most wealth. And they wonder why Nigerians are fed up?”

Destiny dude said:

“Yesterday, Tinubu claimed that his opponent plunged millions of citizens into untold HARDSHIP, HUNGER & INSECURITY. His wife and her favourite slave are sharing the latest Prado Jeeps amongst their gangs. Dayo flies private jets ALWAYS. The ancient druggie is so heartless!”

Another X user said:

“These are the issues. Remi Tinubu asked our mothers and us to go and be frying Ankara, roasted corn and kulikuli, but APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, presented a brand-new 2026 Prado SUV to APC youth leaders for election mobilisation activities. Meanwhile, men of the Nigerian Army are eating bread with natural green (algae) tea. Meanwhile, ambulances 🚑 no dey hospitals in Nigeria in 2026. BUT PRADOS details for political jobbers! If you 🫵 DON’T end APC, APC WILL END YOU📌 Vote 🗳️ Obi-Kwankwaso, OK ✌2027, and put an end to these demonic rascalities and criminality”

Another comment:

“You’re a disgrace, Dayo Israel. For one moment, I thought these were ambulances for FMC, Abeokuta. What is this?”

2027: Oluremi Tinubu confirms vehicle donation to APC youth leaders

Oluremi Tinubu, wife of Nigeria’s president, Bola Tinubu, has confirmed donating Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to the National Youth Wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to support its grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mrs Tinubu made the disclosure on Sunday during a campaign strategy meeting with regional APC youth leaders led by the party’s National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, at the State House, Abuja.

The disclosure comes hours after Mr Israel posted a video showing seven brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs, saying he had presented them to selected youth leaders to support their election mobilisation activities.

Mr Israel subsequently deleted the post after it triggered widespread reactions on social media, with Nigerians questioning the reported cost of the vehicles and the use of expensive SUVs for political mobilisation amid economic hardship

In her remarks at the meeting, Mrs Tinubu said her office would provide campaign materials, footwear and other items to support the APC youth leaders during the campaign. She also said she had donated additional utility vehicles to facilitate their movement and strengthen their grassroots outreach.

Mrs Tinubu urged the APC youth leaders to intensify their grassroots mobilisation and focus on delivering tangible results rather than social media activities. She also encouraged them to demonstrate independence, competence and versatility, while developing original ideas and taking initiative in their political activities.

Mrs Tinubu urged the youth leaders to focus on tangible political results rather than social media activity, while encouraging them to develop original ideas, demonstrate competence and take initiative.

She also stressed the need for young leaders to be independent and versatile rather than rely on their parents or others to provide direction.

Not First Time

Recall that this is not the first time Mrs Tinubu has donated vehicles for public or institutional use. Earlier, she donated 50 buses and 30 tricycles to her alma mater, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, following complaints about transportation difficulties on the campus.

In a statement announcing receipt of the vehicles, the university said the donation was intended to ease students’ transportation challenges and improve mobility within the institution.

“The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, wishes to inform the University Community, particularly our dear students, of the successful receipt of 50 buses and 30 tricycles graciously donated by the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON,” the statement said.

The university described the donation as a demonstration of Mrs Tinubu’s commitment to students’ welfare, adding that the vehicles were expected to significantly ease transportation difficulties on campus.

PREMIUM TIMES contacted Mrs Tinubu’s spokesperson, Busayo Kukoyi, and Mr Isreal to seek the Presidency’s response to the public reactions, including concerns about the cost of the vehicles and the circumstances surrounding the donation, but there was no response as of the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, speaking after the meeting, Mr Israel later confirmed the donation, expressing gratitude to Mrs Tinubu for providing the vehicles to the APC National Youth Wing.

He said the vehicles would enable the youth leaders to reach rural communities, particularly areas with difficult terrain in the South-east and South-west, as the party intensifies its grassroots mobilisation.

“The primary objective is to communicate the administration’s achievements in healthcare, education and welfare, particularly interventions such as the student loan programme and the establishment of primary healthcare centres,” he said.

Mr Israel said he would embark on a nationwide mobilisation tour to promote the administration’s programmes and seek support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid. He said the tour would take the administration’s message to rural communities and highlight government interventions in healthcare, education and welfare.

The APC youth leader also called for greater coordination among groups supporting Mr Tinubu’s re-election, saying all such groups should operate under the official party structure.

“All APC groups must align with the official party structure. All support groups, including PBAT, Door to Door, City Boy and Tinubu Again, are expected to work directly with the APC,” he said.

The meeting was part of preparations by the APC youth wing for its grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
