A tenant in Lagos recently discovered her bedroom floor had collapsed straight into a soakaway. One moment she’s living in a normal room, the next she’s staring into a dark pit where the tiles used to be.
This isn’t some rare freak accident. In crowded cities where land is expensive and landlords are racing to maximise every square metre, some builders dig septic tanks right under the house. It’s cheaper, faster, and frees up outdoor space for more rooms to rent. The slab gets covered with tiles, the tenant pays, and everyone hopes the floor holds.
Until it doesn’t.
Before you hand over that rent, do a proper walk-through. Tap the floors. Ask where the soakaway sits. Look for cracks, soft spots, or strange smells. A landlord who gets defensive about basic questions is already telling you something.
Your safety is not an afterthought. Don’t let someone else’s corner-cutting become your nightmare.
