On this day, August 19, 1993, Senator Bola Tinubu spoke in the Senate against the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, describing it as another c0up d'état and calling for resistance to injust!ce and lawlessness.
He was quoted as saying: “We have a situation that suggests that the abørtion of the June 12 election is another cøup d’etat. My question is, when are we going to stop tolerating injustices, cõup d’etat and abūse by the people on whom we invested so much resources—the public funds of this country?… Yes, it is true that we have a cr!sis, but for every action, there must be a reaction. This is a self-infl!cted cr!sis because, without the abørtion or annulment of the June 12 election, there would be no cr!sis like this. We have a government that made the law and abūsed its law. Therefore, the present military administration, by virtue of abrogation and viølation of its own decree, has committed a cr!me.”
Right from that moment, he became a man closely watched. Bola Tinubu was later arrested on June 2, 1994, by the military government of Sani Abacha almost 10 months after he made the comment on the floor of the Senate.
Many years later, he is the President of the country.
