Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, on Monday, September 7, 2026, made a notable appearance at the inauguration of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) campaign office in Wuse, Abuja.
The campaign office belongs to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who is seeking the presidency under the APM platform.
Videos from the event showed Obi greeting APM officials and supporters under a canopy, with several people wearing APM-branded caps. He was later seen seated close to Bauchi State Governor and APM national leader, Bala Mohammed.
Makinde and Obi have previously held private discussions on opposition coordination, making Obi’s public appearance at the launch of Makinde’s campaign office particularly significant ahead of the 2027 election.
At the event, Bala Mohammed warned political rivals against underrating Makinde and the APM, saying the party was determined to “reset Nigeria.”
Obi is running for president under the NDC with Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate, while Makinde is the APM presidential candidate with Lawal Daura as his running mate. Meanwhile, another major opposition bloc is associated with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
With Nigeria’s opposition camps still divided ahead of 2027, Obi’s appearance at a rival presidential candidate’s campaign office immediately generated political speculation online. Some supporters described the development as strategic, while others interpreted it as a possible sign of growing opposition cooperation.
However, no merger, alliance or formal agreement was announced at the event.
For now, Obi’s presence could simply represent political courtesy, ongoing discussions between opposition figures or an attempt to project a united opposition front. But with the 2027 presidential race already taking shape, the appearance has added another layer of interest to the evolving relationship between Obi and Makinde.
