Been seeing a lot of debates lately about which breeds are "best," so let me put my honest take and see who agrees/disagrees.
For guarding/security:
Boerboel and Caucasian Shepherd top the list for me — they handle heat reasonably well and have that natural protective instinct. Rottweiler too, but needs more grooming/care than people realize.
For family homes with kids:
Labrador and German Shepherd (well-trained) tend to do best. Contrary to what people think, GSDs can be very gentle with proper socialization — the aggression stories are usually about poor training, not the breed itself.
For apartment/small compound living:
Lhasa Apso, Shih Tzu, or even a well-behaved mixed breed. People underestimate how much bigger breeds suffer in cramped spaces with no exercise.
Most overrated for Nigerian conditions:
Huskies and other cold-climate breeds. Beautiful dogs, but a LOT of people buy them without understanding the heat stress, shedding, and grooming needs. I've seen too many rehomed within a year because owners weren't prepared.
Curious what breeds you guys have had the best/worst experience with — genuinely want to hear from people who've actually owned these, not just "I heard."
(Also — for anyone into more serious breed talk, breeding advice, or just avoiding bad purchases, there's a Telegram group a few of us run where this kind of discussion happens daily. Link in my first comment if you want in.)
