Polygamy is a practice permitted in Islam, allowing a man to marry up to four wives. However, it comes with great responsibility and requires adherence to justice, kindness, and wisdom as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Many Nigerian Muslim men embrace this tradition, but some common mistakes can strain these marriages. Below is a compilation of these mistakes and their corrections based on the Sunnah.
1. Inequitable Treatment Among Wives
Mistake:
Favoring one wife over others in love, time, financial support, or attention, leading to jealousy and family discord.
Correction:
The Prophet ﷺ emphasized justice:
“Whoever has two wives and leans more towards one of them, he will come on the Day of Resurrection with a side hanging down.” (Sunan Abu Dawood)
*Strive to be just in spending, time, and affection.
*Schedule equal time and attention for each wife.
*Be transparent and fair in financial matters.
2. Poor Communication and Neglect
Mistake:
Ignoring the emotional and spiritual needs of wives, causing misunderstandings and emotional distance.
Correction:
*The Prophet ﷺ was known for his kindness and attention to his wives.
*Maintain open, respectful communication with each wife.
*Listen actively and address their concerns.
*Engage in family activities that include all wives and children.
3. Lack of Knowledge About Rights and Responsibilities
Mistake:
Marrying multiple wives without understanding Islamic duties, leading to neglect or violation of rights.
Correction:
*Study the Qur’an and Sunnah regarding polygamy.
*Consult knowledgeable scholars for guidance.
*Understand wives’ rights: maintenance, kindness, fairness, and respect.
*Fulfill responsibilities sincerely.
4. Financial Mismanagement
Mistake:
Failing to provide adequately for all wives and children, causing hardship and conflict.
Correction:
*The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to divide his time equally among his wives, and he said: “O Allaah, this is my division of that which I can control, so do not take me to task for that over which You have control and I have no control” [meaning love in the heart].
*Ensure financial readiness before marrying additional wives.
*Budget and provide fairly for all.
*Prioritize basic needs and avoid extravagance.
5. Ignoring Children’s Emotional Needs
Mistake:
Neglecting children’s feelings, causing rivalry and emotional harm.
Correction:
*Spend quality time with all children equally.
*Encourage love and respect among siblings.
*Address children’s concerns openly.
*Involve all wives harmoniously in parenting.
6. Marrying for Wrong Reasons
Mistake:
Marrying additional wives for status, looks, peer pressure, or without sincere intention.
Correction:
*Reflect on intentions and readiness.
*Seek Allah’s guidance through prayer (Istikhara) and consultation.
*Ensure emotional, financial, and spiritual preparedness.
*Prioritize the well-being of existing family members.
Polygamy is a noble Sunnah when practiced with justice, knowledge, patience, and compassion. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"The best of you are those who are best to their families." (Tirmidhi 3895). Be a good representative of Islam and be among the best of us.
Muslim men are encouraged to follow the Sunnah closely, avoid these common mistakes, and build harmonious, loving families blessed by Allah. We ask Allah to unite us and our families in Jannah! Aamin
