Oyinlola Breaks Silence on Adeleke’s Alleged Car Gift: ‘Osun Government Gave Me, Not Adeleke’
Former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has denied claims that the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke, personally bought or gave him a vehicle.
Oyinlola made the clarification on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he explained that the vehicle provided to him was a benefit guaranteed to former governors under a law enacted by the Osun State House of Assembly.
The former governor said the provision was not a personal gesture from Adeleke, but an obligation of the state government under the law.
According to Oyinlola, the law provides that former governors are entitled to have their official vehicle replaced every four years.
He pointed out that he has been out of office for 16 years, meaning that, under the arrangement, the vehicle allocated to him would have been due for replacement several times.
“That is far from the truth, and it is a sad development that a governor will continue to tell lies,” Oyinlola said during the interview.
He explained that the legislation covers benefits available to individuals who have previously governed the state and is not dependent on the identity of the governor currently in office.
“One of the things that is accrued to a former governor is that for every four years, his vehicle should be changed. It wasn’t Adeleke that gave me a car but Osun State government. It is a law,” he stated.
Oyinlola's comments come amid political disagreements in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election, with political figures from the major parties exchanging claims and counterclaims over issues surrounding governance and the state's political leadership.
The former governor's clarification therefore places his position on the vehicle issue within the context of an existing state law, rather than portraying it as a personal gift from the incumbent governor.
