Nigerian Woman Jumps From 6th Floor During Delhi Drug Raid; Two Others Arrested

According to Delhi Police, the woman jumped from the balcony to evade being caught during an anti-narcotics raid.

A Nigerian woman was injured as she allegedly attempted to escape by jumping from the sixth floor of a residential building during a Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) raid in South Delhi’s Mehrauli, officers said on Tuesday. Two other Nigerian nationals were arrested and over 300 grams of cocaine was seized during the operation.

The operation was conducted on Monday night in Mehrauli’s Gandhi Colony following intelligence inputs about alleged narcotics trafficking, according to the agency.

‘Accused attempted to destroy evidence’

According to the NCB, members of the raiding team searched the premises after receiving the tipoff. As officers entered the flat, the occupants allegedly attempted to destroy evidence by allegedly flushing the drugs. During the operation, officers also found traces of cocaine on the walls of the flat and on the bodies of the accused, the agency said. The NCB said it seized 318 gram of cocaine and 6 grams of heroin during the raid.

Two Nigerian nationals, identified as Gabriel Nwankwo Uchenna and Igwe Chikezie Joshua, were arrested during the operation.

During the search, another Nigerian national, identified as Ugochukwu Nwabugo, allegedly attempted to flee by jumping from the sixth floor of the building. She suffered injuries to her head, back and leg. The members of the NCB team, officers said, arranged for her immediate evacuation to Fortis Hospital, from where she was referred to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for specialised treatment.

She is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS and is recovering from her injuries, the agency said.

Officers said they are investigating the case further.

Delhi saw similar raids earlier

In June, during a similar operation at Delhi Police Anti-Narcotics Squad raid at a synthetic drug manufacturing unit, a 41-year-old Nigerian woman died after allegedly jumping from the fourth floor of a residential building in Outer Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar. Police had then recovered chemicals, laboratory equipment and suspected narcotic substances from the premises.

A similar incident was reported in 2017 when a Nigerian national died after allegedly jumping from the fourth floor of a building in Chhatarpur during a Special Cell raid. The police had said the man jumped in an attempt to evade arrest after spotting the raiding team, while narcotic substances were allegedly recovered during the operation.
