Okechukwu Charles Nelson, who was found in possession of 42 grams of cannabis-type narcotics, 700 milligrams of cocaine and one narcotic pill at his residence in Nicosia, has been sentenced to two years in prison.
The case against Nelson, who was tried before the Nicosia High Criminal Court on charges related to the possession, acquisition and distribution of narcotics, was concluded yesterday.
The decision of the court panel was delivered by Court President Füsun Cemaller.
Drugs Found During Search of Residence
Presenting the facts of the case, the court stated that police searched Nelson’s residence in Gönyeli on May 3, 2026.
During the search, police found 42 grams of cannabis-type narcotic substance, 700 milligrams of cocaine and one narcotic pill.
The court emphasized that drug-related offences are serious and widespread crimes that pose a threat to public health and social order. It noted that effective and deterrent sentences are necessary in such cases, taking the public interest into consideration.
The court also noted that while the cannabis found in Nelson’s possession was considered a relatively less harmful type of narcotic, cocaine was regarded as a particularly dangerous drug, which was taken into account when determining the sentence.
Guilty Plea Taken Into Consideration
The court said Nelson’s admission of guilt and his contribution to the early conclusion of the proceedings were considered mitigating factors in his favour.
After considering all the facts and circumstances of the case, the Nicosia High Criminal Court sentenced Nelson to two years in prison.
