Marriage in Islam is a sacred bond, a source of tranquility, love, and mercy between spouses. The Qur’an and Sunnah provide timeless guidance to nurture a happy and successful marriage. Here are practical tips to help couples build a strong, loving relationship.
1. Make Marriage a Means to Seek Allah’s Pleasure
Marriage is not just a social contract but a spiritual journey. The ultimate goal is to please Allah and earn His reward.
“And among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy.” (Qur’an 30:21)
Reflection: Seek to build love and mercy as a reflection of Allah’s mercy. Make your marriage a path to Jannah.
2. Communicate with Kindness and Respect
Good communication is the foundation of a happy marriage. Speak kindly and avoid harsh words.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best of you are those who are best to their wives.” (Tirmidhi)
Practical Tip: Use gentle words, listen actively, and resolve conflicts calmly.
3. Practice Patience and Forgiveness
No marriage is without challenges. Patience and forgiveness help overcome difficulties.
“And let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Qur’an 24:22)
The Prophet ﷺ forgave his wives and encouraged mercy.
Advice: Forgive mistakes quickly and avoid holding grudges.
4. Fulfill Each Other’s Rights
Islam emphasizes mutual rights and responsibilities in marriage.
“They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them.” (Qur’an 2:187)
Explanation: Just as clothing protects and beautifies, spouses should protect and honor each other.
Practical Tip: Share household duties, provide emotional support, and maintain physical and emotional intimacy.
5. Pray for Each Other
Supplication strengthens the bond and invites Allah’s blessings.
The Prophet ﷺ taught: “The best of you are those who pray for their wives.”
Action: Regularly make dua for your spouse’s well-being, guidance, and happiness.
6. Maintain Trust and Honesty
Trust is essential for marital harmony.
“O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones...” (Qur’an 66:6)
Protect your family by being honest and trustworthy.
Tip: Be transparent, avoid secrets except when/where necessary, and keep promises.
7. Show Appreciation and Gratitude
Expressing gratitude nurtures love and positivity.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “He who does not thank people, does not thank Allah.” (Tirmidhi)
Practice: Regularly thank your spouse for their efforts and kindness.
8. Share Quality Time and Affection
Spending time together strengthens emotional bonds.
The Prophet ﷺ was affectionate and playful with his wives.
Advice: Engage in activities together, listen, and show affection daily.
9. Seek Knowledge Together
Learning about Islam and marriage helps couples grow spiritually and emotionally.
“And say, ‘My Lord, increase me in knowledge.’” (Qur’an 20:114)
Tip: Attend Islamic marriage workshops, read books, and discuss faith together.
10. Resolve Conflicts with Wisdom
Disagreements are natural but should be handled wisely.
“And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people.” (Qur’an 4:35)
Advice: Use calm dialogue, mediation, and avoid anger.
A happy marriage in Islam is built on love, mercy, patience, and mutual respect, all rooted in obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. By following these tips, Nigerian couples can nurture strong, blessed relationships that bring peace in this life and reward in the Hereafter.
