 Glassgow 2026: Team Nigeria Wins Its First Gold At Commonwealth Games

On Friday 24 July 2026, with an incredible lift of 119.0kg in the women’s para powerlifting lightweight event, Esther Ogechika Nworgu won gold and set a new Commonwealth Games record.


It was Nigeria’s first Gold medal at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and to put the icing on the cake, Nworgu’s team mate Esther Onyema got silver in the same event with a lift of 115.5kg.


England’s Olivia Broome got the bronze by lifting 106.6kg, while Kenya’s Hellen Wawira Kariuki, England’s Charlotte McGuinness, and India’s Suman Devi came 4th, 5th and 6th respectively.


Roland Ezuruike had earlier in the day won Nigeria’s first medal of the Games with silver in the Men’s Lightweight event.


Team Nigeria’s tally after day one of the Games now stands at 3 medals i.e.1 gold & 2 silver.


The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games hold in Scotland 23 July to 02 August 2026, with 10 sports and some 3,000 athletes representing 74 countries.
