What Will Happen on the Day of Resurrection?

The Day of Resurrection (Yawm al-Qiyamah) is one of the most significant events in Islamic belief, marking the end of the world and the beginning of the eternal life in the Hereafter. It is a day when all human beings will be resurrected and held accountable for their deeds. Below is a summary of the sequence of events that will take place on this monumental day:

Sequence of Events on the Day of Resurrection:

1. Resurrection and Gathering:

All people will be resurrected from their graves and will rise to the land of gathering, where they will stand awaiting the next stages of the Day of Judgment.

2. The Prophet’s Cistern (Al-Kawthar):

After a long period of standing, Allah will bring forth for His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) his cistern, known as Al-Kawthar, from which people will drink and find relief.

3. The Great Intercession:

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) will then perform the great intercession, asking Allah to hasten the reckoning for all people, seeking mercy and forgiveness on their behalf.

4. Examination of Deeds:

Following the intercession, the deeds of every individual will be examined thoroughly.

5. The Reckoning:

After the examination, the reckoning (hisab) will begin, where every person’s actions will be accounted for.

6. Distribution of Records:

The records of deeds will be given to the people, showing the details of their actions.

7. Further Reckoning:

A further reckoning will take place to leave no room for excuses, as the records will be read aloud to establish proof of each person’s deeds.

8. The Balance (Mizan):

The deeds will then be weighed on the balance to determine the ultimate fate of each individual.

9. Grouping of People:

People will be divided into groups and categories based on their deeds and spiritual calibre.

10. Darkness Before Hell:

Just before reaching Hell, a darkness will prevail, a moment of great fear and anxiety—Allah’s refuge is sought from this.

11. The Prophet on the Sirat Bridge:

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) will be the first to stand on the Sirat Bridge, the bridge over Hellfire that everyone must cross.

12. First to Enter Paradise:

The first to enter Paradise after the Prophet will be the poor among the Muhajirun (early emigrants) and the poor among the Ansar (helpers), followed by the poor among the wider Muslim community.

Reflection

The Day of Resurrection is a day of immense significance, justice, and mercy. It reminds believers of the importance of righteous deeds, accountability, and the hope for Allah’s mercy. Preparing for this day through faith and good actions is central to Islamic teachings. We ask Allah to grant us our record book in our right hand and make swift our passage on the Sirat bridge. May we enter Jannah without first entering Jahannam!
