Dangote Refinery Export 1.66 Bn Litres Of Fuel In April Amid Middle East Tension

Dangote Refinery Export 1.66bn Litres of Fuel in April

Fresh data from Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority show say Dangote Petroleum Refinery exported about 1.66 billion litres of refined petroleum products for April 2026.

The exports happen amid growing tension for Middle East and fears of disruption to global fuel supply routes following increasing conflict between the United States and Iran.

Analysis of NMDPRA April 2026 fact sheet show say the refinery exported:

513 million litres of petrol (PMS)

534 million litres of diesel

615 million litres of aviation fuel

Dangote Refinery Hits Major Export Milestone

The development mark the first time the refinery go export such huge volume of petroleum products, especially diesel and aviation fuel.

The 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery located for Lekki, Lagos, currently remain the only major refinery for Nigeria wey dey produce enough fuel for local use and export.

The combined export volume equals about 55.4 million litres daily.

Experts say rising geopolitical tension and uncertainty around Strait of Hormuz don increase global demand for alternative fuel suppliers like Nigeria.

Refinery Operated Near Full Capacity

According to the NMDPRA report, local refineries operated at average capacity utilisation of 99.12 percent in April, with Dangote Refinery accounting for most of the production.

The regulator reveal say the refinery achieved 100 percent operational capacity for most days in April.

The report also show say domestic refineries received 18.37 million barrels of crude oil in April, compared to 13.11 million barrels recorded in March.

Petrol, Diesel, Jet Fuel Exports Rise

Findings show say Dangote Refinery maintained strong exports despite supplying local market.

Average daily petrol production stood at 53.6 million litres, with:

40.7 million litres supplied locally

17.1 million litres exported daily

Diesel production averaged 23.6 million litres daily, while exports reached 17.8 million litres daily — more than double local supply of 8 million litres.

For aviation fuel, exports stood at 20.5 million litres daily compared to local supply of 2.6 million litres.

Nigeria Becoming Net Petrol Exporter

Reports indicate say Nigeria don gradually become net exporter of petrol for the first time in decades due to increased production from Dangote Refinery.

The refinery had earlier exported about 434 million litres of petrol in March after local production exceeded domestic demand.

Experts believe jet fuel exports fit rise further if Middle East crisis continues to affect traditional global supply chains.

Petrol Consumption Still High

NMDPRA data also show say Nigerians consumed average of 51.1 million litres of petrol daily in April.

Diesel consumption stood at 17.3 million litres daily, while aviation fuel consumption averaged 2.5 million litres per day.

Despite improved local refining, petrol prices still remain high nationwide.

The regulator blame the situation partly on rising global crude oil prices, wey average about $120.55 per barrel during the month.

Dangote Refinery Key to Nigeria Economy

The report highlight the growing importance of Dangote Refinery to Nigeria energy security and foreign exchange earnings as global fuel trade patterns continue to change.

Even as Nigeria exports more petrol, NMDPRA still dey issue licences for petrol importation into the country.
