Southern Governors, Traditional Rulers Meet in Iperu, Adopt Key Resolutions on Security and Regional Cooperation
Southern governors and traditional rulers from across the South-West, South-East, and South-South converged in Iperu, Ogun State, on Wednesday for a joint meeting hosted by Governor @DapoAbiodunCON. The high-level gathering focused on strengthening regional security, deepening cooperation, and advancing shared development priorities.
In a statement issued after the meeting, Governor Abiodun said the forum reaffirmed its collective commitment to the unity, stability, and peace of Nigeria, while also addressing urgent challenges affecting the southern region. He noted that the governors and traditional rulers reviewed the security situation nationwide and extended their condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the recent loss of military personnel in Borno, as well as the mass abductions recorded in Kebbi, Kwara, and Niger States.
The participants commended President Tinubu for ongoing efforts to stabilize the economy, reduce inflation, rehabilitate security institutions, and deliver landmark infrastructure projects such as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road and the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway.
At the end of deliberations, the forum adopted several resolutions, including the creation of a zonal security fund, the establishment of an enhanced intelligence-sharing framework, renewed advocacy for State Police, a unified resident identification programme, and stronger support for local and regional security outfits. Member states were also urged to work with traditional rulers to regulate land allocation and curb illegal mining activities posing security and environmental risks.
The governors and traditional rulers jointly passed a vote of confidence in President Tinubu, reaffirming the long-standing position of the southern region as captured in the 2021 Asaba Accord, which advocated for a President of Southern extraction.
Governor Abiodun stressed that Southern Nigeria remains united and committed to peaceful coexistence across religious and cultural lines. He added that the region would continue to work collaboratively with the Federal Government to promote peace, prosperity, and inclusive progress for all Nigerians.

SOUTHERN GOVERNORS, TRADITIONAL RULERS MEET IN OGUN, ISSUE STRONG RESOLUTIONS ON SECURITY & GOVERNANCE
The Southern Governors’ Forum and the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council met on Wednesday, 26th November 2025, at the Governor’s Residence in Iperu-Remo, Ogun State, where they deliberated on critical issues of security, governance, economic stability, and regional cooperation.
The Forum reaffirmed its commitment to a united Nigeria and strengthened collaboration among Southern states. It commiserated with the President over the tragic loss of military personnel in Borno and recent abductions in Kebbi, Kwara, and Niger States, while praising the successful rescue operations that followed.
Members commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for stabilizing the economy; highlighting steady FX recovery, declining inflation, and reduced food prices; as well as for accelerating landmark infrastructure projects such as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road and Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway. The Forum also welcomed the Renewed Hope Ward Initiative and the rehabilitation of Police and NSCDC training colleges.
The joint session with Southern traditional rulers emphasized the indispensable role of traditional institutions in intelligence gathering, peacebuilding, and community security. The Forum encouraged all states to formally include traditional rulers in security councils.
Security chiefs from the Army, Police, DSS, and NSCDC provided comprehensive regional briefings, leading to the following key resolutions:
1. Zonal Security Fund:
Each geopolitical zone will establish a dedicated fund for joint security operations, with monthly coordination meetings of Security Advisers.
2. Modern Intelligence Infrastructure:
States will jointly invest in communication and surveillance technologies to enable real-time security coordination across the South.
3. State Police:
The Forum renewed its strong advocacy for constitutional approval of State Police.
4. Unified Resident Identification System:
Member states will partner with NIMC to implement a harmonized resident ID system.
5. Strengthened Local Security Outfits:
Regional and community security structures, including hunter groups and surveillance units, will receive increased logistics and equipment support.
6. Regulation of Land & Mining Activities:
States will work with traditional rulers to control land allocation and curb illegal mining.
7. Support for Traditional Councils:
Traditional councils will receive enhanced funding and operational support to deepen their role in governance and security.
In a show of unity, the Forum and the SNTRC passed a Vote of Confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reaffirming support for a Southern President as first declared in the 2021 Asaba Accord.
The Forum condemned attempts to sow division and assured citizens that Southern Nigeria remains united, peaceful, and committed to regional progress. It pledged continued collaboration with the Federal Government to advance peace, prosperity, and development across the South
