At least 12 passengers were abducted on Thursday afternoon when gunmen attacked a boat travelling from Calabar, Cross River State, to Oron in Akwa Ibom State, News360 Nigeria reports.
Among those on board were the Public Relations Officer of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, DSP Timfon John, and former Cross River governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Eyo Ekpo Esq.
A survivor recounted, “They stopped our vessel, boarded it, and when their boat was full, they took off,” adding that a family member was also among those kidnapped.
The boat’s captain, who works with a registered ferry service, reportedly tried to evade the attackers, damaging one of the two engines in the process before turning back to Calabar.
On arrival at the Inland Waterways Jetty, passengers were questioned by the Police, their statements documented, and later released.
Efforts to get official comments from the Police commands in both Cross River and Akwa Ibom States are still ongoing.
