We’re Not Criminals!” – FG Fires Back as Ghanaians Demand Mass Deportation of Nigerians in Viral Protest Video

The Nigerian government has strongly responded to a growing wave of anti-Nigerian sentiment in Ghana, following a viral protest video in which some Ghanaian citizens called for the mass deportation of Nigerians, alleging involvement in criminal activities. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The controversial footage, which surfaced online on July 28, 2025, showed Ghanaian protesters chanting slogans and accusing Nigerians of increasing crime rates in their country. The video has sparked widespread debate across West Africa and beyond.

Reacting swiftly, the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the accusations as “unfair, dangerous, and misleading.”

“Nigerians are not criminals. They are some of the most hardworking and law-abiding citizens you’ll find anywhere in the world,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.

She condemned the blanket stereotyping of Nigerians in Ghana, adding that while a few individuals may be guilty of illegal acts, the majority are peaceful residents, contributing positively to Ghana’s economy and society.

No Evidence of Property Attacks

Dabiri-Erewa also addressed online claims suggesting that Nigerian-owned shops and properties were being attacked or looted in Ghana, saying there is no verified evidence of such events.

“Let’s avoid unverified rumors that can incite panic or trigger reprisal attacks. Both nations must maintain calm,” she advised.

Diplomatic Channels Activated

The NIDCOM boss reassured Nigerians that the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs is already in touch with Ghanaian authorities, working to de-escalate tensions and protect Nigerians’ rights abroad.

She praised the Ghanaian and Nigerian High Commissions for acting promptly to prevent further hostilities and urged citizens of both countries to avoid violence, hate speech, or xenophobic attacks.
