Tension gripped parts of Benin City on Friday, June 27, 2025, after a young man identified as Emma was gunned down by suspected cultists in broad daylight near the bustling Oliha Market, Newspremises reports.
The violent incident reportedly took place around Akugbe Street, causing panic among motorists, traders, and pedestrians, many of whom fled the scene for safety as gunshots rang out.
Victim Chased and Shot in Public
According to multiple eyewitness accounts, the attackers pursued the victim using two separate vehicles before opening fire on him in a calculated ambush. Emma, who was said to be a revenue collector for transport operators, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died on the spot.
“They chased him for a while in their cars, then when he couldn’t escape, they shot him several times in front of everyone,” one eyewitness recounted.
His body was later conveyed by residents using a commercial vehicle to a yet-to-be-disclosed mortuary in the area, as authorities began investigations.
Police Respond to Scene
Following the shooting, operatives from the Textile Mill Road Police Division arrived at the scene to restore calm and initiate early investigations. The police also moved to prevent further unrest in the densely populated market area.
As of the time of this report, no official statement had been issued by the Edo State Police Command, and the identities of the suspects remain unknown. However, the brazen nature of the attack has renewed fears over the resurgence of cult-related killings in Benin City.
Rising Insecurity and Cult-Related Violence in Edo State
Edo State, and particularly Benin City, has witnessed a disturbing increase in cult-related violence in recent years, often marked by street shootouts and reprisal attacks. Friday’s killing adds to a growing list of unresolved cases, sparking fresh concerns among residents over public safety and law enforcement effectiveness.
Community leaders and civil society groups have repeatedly called for intensified policing, intelligence-led crackdowns, and grassroots interventions to curb the escalating threat posed by cult groups operating in the state.
The daylight killing of Emma near one of Benin City’s busiest commercial areas serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges in Edo State. As investigations continue, the public is urging authorities to act swiftly to identify and apprehend those behind the attack and restore confidence in public safety.
