Reps give WAEC 24 hour ultimatum to appear over late-night exams

The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies has given the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) a 24-hour ultimatum to appear before it on Friday, May 30, 2025, over concerns related to the ongoing Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE)

The Committee Chairman, Hon. Oboku Abonsizibe Oforji, issued the directive on Thursday after WAEC failed to attend a previous summons.

Oforji explained that WAEC was called to address numerous complaints and reported irregularities during the current exams.

In a statement, he recalled that the Committee had invited WAEC on Tuesday, May 27, to provide clarifications on several issues disrupting the exam process nationwide.

He expressed disappointment over WAEC’s absence at the hearing scheduled for Thursday, May 29, calling it unacceptable given the widespread public concern.

“The examinations have been plagued by serious irregularities. Reports indicate that students were still writing exams as late as midnight at some centres across the country,” Oforji said.

“The House finds it necessary to summon WAEC to explain these incidents and the distress faced by candidates. WAEC’s response this morning—that they could not appear due to their involvement in the exams—is exactly why we need their presence.”

Oforji stressed that the Committee expects WAEC to appear without fail on Friday and warned that failure to comply would lead the House to use its constitutional authority to compel their attendance.

“Our aim is not to target WAEC but to obtain answers that will ease public fears and prevent such problems from happening again. WAEC has overseen exams for decades, yet we have never seen this level of disorder,” he added.

“Clearly, something is wrong and must be resolved. WAEC must appear on Friday, May 30, 2025, or face legislative sanctions as stipulated by the Constitution.”
